I want to break free es uno de los temas más grandes de Queen. Radiado hasta la saciedad. Fue compuesto por John Deacon, el bajista de la banda al igual que another one bite the dust, friends will be friends..etc. Queen era mucho más que Freddie, se trató de un conjunto de 4 genios que se conocieron en la universidad y al decir genios, me refiero también en lo académico. John Deacon obtuvo su licenciatura en Ingeniería electrónica. Al morir Fredie, se escucharon voces sobre si Queen debía continuar en la música o no..John dijo que el proyecto Queen no existía sin Freddie Mercury. Si la decisión por parte de Bryan May y Roger Taylor, era continuar con la banda, la aceptaba y respetaba, pero él no participaría en ella. No se discutió más..Queen finalizó como empezó…con Freddie Mercury.
El vídeo de la canción es uno de los más recordados de la banda, en el que sus integrantes parodian un culebrón británico de la época llamada Coronation Street, caracterizados como mujeres. Razón suficiente según los censores para que el video fuese vetado por MTV en USA, por lo que Queen no incluyó a Estados Unidos en el The Works Tour.
El vídeo no fue visto en las pantallas estadounidenses hasta 1991 coincidiendo con la muerte del vocalista.

La canción también fue utilizada durante el proceso de liberación de Nelson Mandela por su innegable fuerza y sentido..sobre todo en su versión en directo...
