La letra describe un misterioso lugar en el cual,no es tan fácil acceder como salir. A primera vista, cuenta la historia de un viajero que entra en un hotel, y no puede abandonarlo por diferentes motivos.
La canción según manifiestan sus autores, es una crítica al narcisimo, egoismo y hedonismo; a la sazón con la autodestrucción y la avaricia de la industria musical. Don Henley manifestó de la canción: "Es nuestra interpretación de la gran vida en Los Ángeles". Más tarde reiteró "es básicamente , una canción sobre el lado oscuro del sueño americano y sobre los excesos que se comenten en nuestro país. Cantamos sobre ello ya que es algo que conocemos de primera mano.
Don Henley y Glenn escribieron la mayor parte de la letra. " Ninguno de nosotros es originario de California y todos sentimos lo mismo cuando nos acercamos por primera vez. Las luces de la gran ciudad te seducen y atraen haciéndote soñar, más tarde, te das cuenta de que los sueños siempre guardan pesadillas en su interior."
La letra es muy abstracta, por ello ha sido interpretada de maneras muy distintas. Algunos religiosos trataron de identificar el "hotel" mencionado con una antigua Iglesia Cristiana comprada por Anton La Vey; en la cual se realizaban misas satánicas y ceremonias ocultistas. Otro rumor es que el "Hotel California" se podía identificar con un psiquiátrico .
Me quiero centrar en la leyenda satánica que ha rodeado a la canción , ya que es la historia más recurrente que se suele mencionar.
La explicación oficial o mantenida por el grupo, es qué la canción también puede ser interpretada como una metáfora sobre el mundo de la droga,y los centros de internamiento para el tratamiento de las adicciones.
En la letra observaremos que se habla de drogas y locura, pero también en un ámbito muy poco concreto.
La Explicación satánica. Se especula con que la canción habla sobre una antigua Iglesia Cristiana que fue convertida en Iglesia satánica. Quizás se tratase sin ser tan radical, de un lugar de concentración para la realización de ritos satánicos. Ahondaremos pues, en la figura del creador del supuesto "Hotel" Anton Szandor (o Alexander La Vey).
Anton Szandor (o Alexander La Vey ) murió en octubre de 1997 y fue enterrado en la fiesta de Halloween. Hijo de un pastor protestante, de antepasados georgianos, gitanos y rumanos. Llegó a desarollar su carrera profesional como músico, llegando a tocar el oboe en la orquesta sinfónica de San Francisco. Otra curiosidad es que trabajó como domador en un circo y como fotógrafo para la policía de Los Ángeles.
El 30 de abril de 1966, fundó la Iglesia de Satán (The Church of Satan). Escribió la Biblia satánica, con el subtítulo de La otra ciencia.
Se comenta que escribió su famosa biblia satánica en el "hotel" California y la canción, es un homenaje a la celebración de tal hecho. Un dato curioso, ya de película de misterio... es la imagen que se tomó para la portada del disco. En ella, supuestamente aparece en los ventanales del edificio fotografiado...... la silueta de Alexander La Vey.... si aparece o no...Se lo dejo a vuestro ímpetu investigador...
Un hecho inegable, es que se trata de una de las canciones más grandes de todos los tiempos. Quizás por ello, sea objeto de misterios, que traten de engrandecer su leyenda.
