En su juventud jugó como portero en el equipo B del Real Madrid, uno de los equipos filiales en categorías inferiores del conjunto merengue profesional. Mientras jugaba, al mismo tiempo estudiaba la carrera de Derecho; el 22 de septiembre de 1963 -al quedarle sólo una asignatura para terminar la carrera- tuvo un grave accidente automovilístico junto con un grupo de amigos. A consecuencia de éste quedó semiparalítico y sin poder caminar durante dos años, acontecimiento que lo alejó para siempre del futbol.
Eladio Magdaleno, un enfermero que cuidó de Julio Iglesias fue la primera persona que le regaló una guitarra. Al darse cuenta de la constante afición de Iglesias por escribir poemas, muchos de ellos tristes y versos románticos, el enfermero le obsequió la guitarra también como parte de su terapia, para que ejercitara sus dedos y pasara el tiempo.
En un viaje a Inglaterra para aprender el idioma, Julio conoció a Gwendolyne Bollore, la cuál se convertiría en su novia y fue su inspiración para una de sus canciones más famosas: Gwendolyne.
