El 18 de octubre de 1974, Mary Woodson, quien era una pareja sentimental de Green, le pidió matrimonio y el rehusó la propuesta, a pesar de que ella ya estaba casada con otro hombre. La mujer al ver que había sido rechazada, se acercó al cantante mientras él se bañaba y le arrojó una olla con sémola hirviendo en su espalda. Inmediatamente, Green fue hospitalizado, con quemaduras de tercer grado en su estómago, dorso y brazos.
